Characteristics of plankton

  • Plankton is found exclusively in the water.
  • The most important feature, however, is that these creatures can not move on their own, but are dependent on the flow of the water to float from place A to place B.
  • A distinction is animal and vegetable plankton. While the plant variant photosynthesis operates in order to survive (eg green algae), is at the animal specimen to a living being, which in turn feeds on other organisms.
  • Zooplankton exists in various shapes and sizes. Many species have small aids the body such as arrows or umbrellas, which they can keep better in the flow. It so happens that the jellyfish with several meters in length to the "micro-organisms" counts. However, the most common members of this genus is the copepod. Its body length is between at least 0.1 to 2 mm depending on age.
  • However, there are also animal organisms "on time". The larvae of some fish and bottom dwellers are in the larval stage also for animal plankton.

Zooplankton - diet and predators

  • The animal organisms mainly feed on the plant micro-organisms, but also of other zooplankton.
  • Without plankton in the sea many other animals could not survive there. They are mainly used as a food source. Although it may seem incredible, but the big fish such as the basking shark, the Devil Rays and the Bartwal are pure plankton.
  • Whether a body of water is rich or poor in microorganisms, you can often find also on the color. Green shimmering seas are clearly planktonhaltiger as waters with blue color.
